The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) in Essex County almost broke a record this Labour Day weekend but not for the right reasons.
The OPP say they issued one of the largest number of tickets ever by any OPP Detachment in West Region during the holiday weekend. Police said they processed more than 250 tickets, including 175 speeding violations, six stunt driving offences, nine distracted driving charges, 53 other Highway Traffic Act violations and six marine-related offences.
"Driving is a privilege and while we were fortunate this past holiday weekend having had no fatalities to report, officers did investigate a number of motor vehicle collisions resulting in personal injury and property damage," said Inspector Glenn Miller, the detachment commander with Essex County OPP.
A total of 16 charges were also laid for other traffic-related offences, including a suspension for drunk driving.
"With the start of the new school season and nearing the end of summer, we can expect an increase in vehicular traffic within our municipalities and along our highways," said Miller. "We appreciate the public immediately advising the OPP when they observe improper driving to enable our officers to respond quickly and effectively.
