Health Unit make top executive positions permanent

The Windsor-Essex County Health Unit has decided to make Theresa Marentette and Dr Wajid Ahmed the permanent CEO and Medical Officer of Health.

They have been filling the roles on an acting basis for a year already.

The health unit engaged in a formal recruitment and review process but confirmed the positions at a board meeting Thursday.

Marentette has worked for the health unit for 27 years and has been a member of the senior leadership team the past five. In addition to CEO, she has also served as the Chief Nursing Officer involved in the strategic planning and development of public health nursing.

Ahmed has the Associate Medical Officer of Health previously for two years, before taking on the role of acting Medical Officer of Health after Dr Gary Kirk left in June 2017.

He received his medical training in Pakistan and practiced for several years before completing his Masters in health administration. Once in Canada, he continued his public health education at the University of Waterloo. He completed his residency training at the University of Ottawa.

Approval from the province is likely, but Ahmed's new role is not official until the Ontario Chief Medical Officer of Health and the Minister of Health and Long-Term Care approve the health unit's recommendation.
