Enwin comes to Kids First Food Bank aid

When the Kids First Food Bank was forced to close last week because it did not have enough food on the shelves to meet demand, workers at Enwin Utilities came through.

The workers launched a food drive, and within 48 hours collected enough food to fill a pickup truck. That was worth about $400. They also raised $950 in cash from its Grass Roots Community Support Fund.

The executive director of the Windsor Homes Coalition, which operates the food bank, accepted a cheque for $1,500 Monday morning.

"To say we are humbled by the support and generosity of individuals and companies like Enwin from across Windsor-Essex would be an understatement," Angela Yakonich said. "We are beyond appreciative for the community support we have received since our closure last Monday."

Walter Argent, who is a planner/scheduler at Enwin, suggested the initiative.

"When you hear about a food bank closing its doors, it is a significant problem for the people who rely on that service," he said. "Our staff responded. Donations began to gather before we even had a drop-off area selected."

Enwin and Essex Powerlines Corporation have also launched their Let's CAN Hunger Together initiative.

The companies plan to donate $10 to local food banks for each of the first 1,000 new signups for paperless billing.
