Province announces money to fight human trafficking in Windsor

Windsor police are among some Ontario police services receiving funding to battle gangs and guns and human trafficking.

The province has announced $1.5 million for those initiatives and Windsor is getting almost $100,000 to give officers advanced technology and training to improve their ability to identify both victims of human trafficking and perpetrators. The funding will also support community partners to allow a multi-disciplinary approach to rescuing victims.

The money comes from the seizure of assets obtained through crime.

Windsor has seen an increase in violent crime and Mayor Drew Dilkens has been asking the province for funding to combat gangs and guns in the city but there's no money for that in this announcement.

This year, 17 police services across Ontario will receive funding for 21 projects.

"The people of Ontario rely on our dedicated police officers to keep communities safe," said Attorney General Caroline Mulroney. "These grants will give police access to new technologies and training to better protect communities and support victims."
