If you want to catch an event at Detroit's Little Caesars Arena, you're going to love the changes Transit Windsor has made.
Transit Windsor kicked off its new tunnel bus route on Friday, and the home of the Red Wings and Pistons figures prominently into that route. The City of Windsor said it's because the city of Detroit is changing access to certain streets in the downtown area.
"Due to a decision by the city of Detroit to close some downtown streets and disallow bus access to several others effective January 1, the tunnel bus will no longer be servicing Beaubien Street, Congress Street, Fort Street and Cass Avenue between Fort Street and Michigan Avenue in Detroit," said Transit Windsor operations manager Steve Habrun in a media release.
This change primarily affects those attending events at St. Andrew's Hall and those going to Greektown Casino or to the Coleman Young Municipal Center, which are steps away from these stops.
The new route generally follows the Windsor International Bus Terminal, goes through the Windsor-Detroit Tunnel, and follows Jefferson Avenue to Cobo Center, then Washington Boulevard and Cass Avenue to Little Caesars Arena, then traces the route back to Jefferson and the tunnel before stopping at Caesars Windsor on the way back to the Windsor terminal.
Service begins at 5:30 a.m. from the terminal Monday through Saturday, with the last bus returning before 1:30 a.m. On Sundays and holidays, service begins at 8 a.m. with the last bus returning approximately 12:50 a.m.
The new route is ideal for Windsorites attending sporting events and concerts in downtown Detroit. In addition to events at the new arena, stops at Cobo Center will be convenient for visitors to next month's North American International Auto Show. Dedicated game-day service to Tiger games at Comerica Park and events at Ford Field will also continue. The new route is also within walking distance to DDOT bus stops, the People Mover and the Woodward Q-Line.
The complete route schedule and map is available at the official Transit Windsor website.
