Pedestrian bridge at Detroit's Packard Plant collapses

The City of Detroit hopes to reopen East Grand Boulevard soon after the pedestrian bridge at the old Packard Plant collapsed.

The Detroit News said the famed bridge fell onto the road around 3 p.m. Wednesday. It reported the weather and age likely contributed to the collapse.

The city issued a statement Wednesday night, which said no one was hurt and the road had been closed.

"Our first priority is to ensure the area is made safe for the public and the roadway is reopened as soon as possible," the city said. "The city is taking the lead on clearing the debris and inspectors from the Buildings Safety Engineering, Environmental Department, and Detroit Building Authority are on the scene to assess the situation."

The Packard Plant, designed by Albert Khan, opened in 1903. It closed in 1958 and since then has been the location for techno parties and raves, as well as being a favourite spot for photographers.
