Heritage award given for Windsor Armouries

Ontario's Lieutenant Governor has honoured the University of Windsor for its restoration of the Windsor Armouries.

The Ontario Heritage Award for Excellence in Conservation recognizes exceptional projects over the past year. The University submitted the entry after finishing renovations to convert the building downtown into its new School of Creative Arts.

About 500 students, faculty, and staff moved into the building in January 2018 after the university contracted CS&P Architects to re-imagine the Armouries.

"The University of Windsor is proud to honour the history of our city and country and to recognize the men and women who served them," said Douglas Kneale, the university's interim president. "It is both a historical touchstone and a cultural vortex for the community."

The Windsor Armouries, built in 1901, was once home to the Essex Fusiliers. The restoration project took four years. Interior and exterior bricks were restored to their original natural red. The masonry was repaired and the windows, replaced.

The award was presented during a ceremony at Queen's Park on February 22.
