More people working in Windsor, not enough to boost jobless rate

Windsor's jobless rate remained at 5.2 per cent in February, unchanged from January according to Statistics Canada's Labour Force Survey for February.

More people joined the labour force as participation grew to 62.1 per cent, up from 61.4 per cent the month before. That figure rose 1.9 per cent from a year ago when the labour participation rate in Windsor was 60.2 per cent.

The national unemployment rate did not change either January to February, although the economy added another 56,000 net jobs, mostly full-time, and the bulk of them in Ontario. It remained at 5.8 per cent.

If you are looking for work, you might want to consider jobs in the professional, scientific, and technical industry. For the third time in four months, the number of positions increased notably. Statistics Canada says it added 18,000 jobs in February with Ontario benefitting from most of the increase. Over the past year, employment in the industry has grown by 6.8 per cent.

On the other end of the spectrum, the number of jobs in accommodations and food services shrunk by 14,000.

Ontario gained a net total of 37,000 jobs enough to keep the unemployment rate steady last month at 5.7 per cent.

For those aged 15 to 24, employment grew, but the rate is still 10.8 per cent across Canada.
