'The luck of the Irish won't be on your side' say OPP

Police are urging revelers not to end up in a paddy wagon on St. Patrick's Day.

"With St. Patrick's Day celebrations happening this weekend, we would like to remind the public to plan ahead for a safe arrival home," Windsor police said in a tweet. "Enjoy all of the festivities, but please do so responsibly."

Police are warning people against drinking and driving and driving high.

The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is also reminding people to have a happy and safe St. Patrick's Day. The OPP wants to remind party hosts and participants to drink responsibly while celebrating.

"Saint Patrick's Day brings friends and families together to socialize and have fun. Yet, it can also become one of the most dangerous days on the roadways due to impaired driving," the OPP said in a new release.

Police recommend designating a sober driver, taking a cab, calling a sober driver for a ride or staying over if you plan on drinking alcohol or consuming cannabis. Party hosts are also being reminded that they are ultimately responsible for anyone that is consuming alcohol or cannabis while at their home or business.

"Make sure all of your guests designate their sober drivers in advance, or help arrange ride-sharing with sober drivers," added provincial police.

Police suggest pouring properly measured drinks and not free pouring or serving doubles. Self-serve bars are not recommended, provide food and snacks, and don't serve alcohol or cannabis to an already intoxicated person. Offer non-alcoholic and/or low alcohol drinks and avoid drinking games, which makes alcohol the focus of the party. Other suggestions, include keeping phone numbers of cab companies handy and taking away the keys from anyone who is thinking of driving impaired by alcohol or drugs.

"I can guarantee you that the luck of the Irish won't be on your side [if you drive impaired]," said Inspector Joseph Varga, Norfolk County OPP Detachment Commander.
