A local employment agency has calculated the new bridge linking Windsor to Detroit will create more than 1,000 spin-off jobs.
Workforce Windsor-Essex (WWE) said an additional 1,091 spin-off jobs will be created on both sides of the border on top of the 2,500 direct jobs that the bridge builder and operator, Bridging North America, has predicted. They include 296 jobs in retail and 198 jobs in accommodation and food service.
WWE is now making it easier to get information about what jobs will be created and how to apply for them by releasing a new guide called “Bridging Our Workforce: A Guide to Jobs related to the Gordie Howe International Bridge.” The guide shares the list of jobs that will be required during the construction, the operation and the maintenance of the new public span, and projects a list of spin-off jobs that are related to it.
Workforce Windsor-Essex has identified 151 job classifications that will be needed during the 36-year project.
"Through our website and this guide, Workforce WindsorEssex is committed to sharing job opportunities related to the construction and operation of the Gordie Howe International Bridge with the Windsor-Essex community," said Michelle Suchiu, an executive director with Workforce WindsorEssex. "The spin-off jobs announced today are another opportunity for our community to benefit from this major infrastructure project."
