No numbers, but impact on feeder plants will be huge

It is still not known what impact Thursday's announcement at the Windsor Assembly Plant will have on the thousands of workers who work at feeder plants across the region.

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles announced it will be eliminating the third shift at the plant, impacting 1,500 workers directly. The move will take effect on September 30.

Unifor Local 444 represents workers at six plants that supply parts for the larger assembly facility. Public Relations Manager Gord Gray said workers at Avancez Assembly, Dakkota Integrated Systems, HBPO Canada, Integram Windsor Magna Seating, Windsor Machine and Stamping, and TRW would be affected.

"I don't have that official number," said Unifor Local 444 President Dave Cassidy. "But just our feeder plants, we have 2,000 workers that are in those facilities."

Unifor Local 195 represents workers at another six plants that either supply either Windsor Assembly directly, or send at least part of their product there.

A staff member in the office at Local 195 said workers at Syncreon Automotive Windsor and Flex N Gate would feel the elimination of the third shift. The other four, part of the Flex Group in Lakeshore, will feel it to a lesser degree.

Meanwhile, reaction to FCA's announcement has continued to come in.

The Windsor Essex Region Chamber of Commerce sent out a release to the media calling on the company to meet with Unifor and the impacted feeder plants "to collaborate in such a way that jobs may be saved and displaced workers may quickly find work."
