Essex County Council will be asked Wednesday night to support a resolution to restrict advertising for vaping products.
LaSalle Town Council passed a motion last month after hearing from a Sandwich Secondary School student who complained vaping has become far too common in area high schools putting the health of students at risk.
Last January, the Chatham-Kent Public Health Unit fined several students at high schools for vaping in prohibited areas. Vaping is currently prohibited everywhere smoking is prohibited, including at high schools.
Petar Bretic and the Windsor-Essex County Health Unit urged councillors in LaSalle to consider a bylaw restricting advertising in public places.

LaSalle adopted the motion and plans to lobby for more restrictions under the Tobacco and Vaping Products Act. The federal legislation was enacted last May, updating an earlier bill that addressed only tobacco use. It regulates the manufacture, sale, and promotion of so-called e-cigarettes.
A report to the county council from LaSalle reads, "the current widespread advertising of vapour products have the potential for promoting nicotine dependence for youth and those who do not currently use tobacco products." It says action by any level of government would be "a step forward in protecting the health of our most vulnerable population."
