LaSalle police say they have handled a potential threat against a local school.
According to a release from Sergeant Jason Woods, officers received information Monday about a threat involving Sandwich Secondary School. Police immediately began gathering information to find the person responsible.
The suspect is a minor, so police have not released their name. Dr. Sharon Pyke, superintendent of education in charge of student well-being for the Greater Essex County District School Board, told BlackburnNewsWindsor.com they were first made aware of a potential threat early Tuesday morning.
"It was brought to their [the police's] attention, and it was investigated and concluded way before school started," said Pyke.
No additional details are being released, but police reassured students, teachers, employees and parents there was no danger attending classes. Pyke said she was also aware that stories began circulating online as to whether there would be school Tuesday, and she recommends that, in the future, parents call the school board directly or visit the board's official social media accounts.
"There were subsequent posts from other people, perhaps telling people not to go to school. That did not come from the school board," said Pyke. "School was open, school was safe, classes went on as usual."
Anyone with information on this incident is asked to give LaSalle police a call at (519) 969-5210, or Crime Stoppers at (519) 258-TIPS (8477).
