Wild ride leads to several charges

Windsor police have charged a man after he allegedly took officers on a wild ride and struck a police cruiser.

Police said officers tried arresting a man driving a vehicle with a stolen licence plate on Monday but he took off, striking two vehicles in a parking lot on Huron Church Road near Northwood Street. Officers took off after him in their marked cruiser but called off the pursuit in the interest of public safety because they said the suspect was driving in a dangerous manner. Nobody was hurt.

An investigation also found the same man was wanted for a gas theft and possession of stolen property from an offence in Tecumseh.

Police found the suspect on Tuesday on Demarse Court near Renaud Street in Tecumseh but the driver reversed his vehicle and hit a Windsor police cruiser while officers tried to arrest him for a second time. Again, no injuries were reported.

"The suspect began driving through a grass lot, and eventually fled from his vehicle on foot," police said in a news release Friday afternoon.

He was finally arrested on Tecumseh Road near Green Valley Drive in Tecumseh.

Officers seized methamphetamine and some property that was later confirmed to be stolen.

Jamie Bernier, 27, of no fixed address, is charged with five counts of possession of stolen property, two counts of escaping custody, two counts of failing to stop for police, two counts of dangerous driving, theft under $5,000, and possession of methamphetamine.
