CRA scam on the rise again

Windsor police continue to investigate a number of fraud cases in which victims are sending money to people claiming to be from the Canadian Revenue Agency.

The Financial Crimes Unit has seen a recent increase in these types of calls, particularly among college and university students.

In several cases, the fraudsters request the money be sent through Bitcoin machines. Money sent through these machines is untraceable.

The Windsor Police Service is asking the public to slow down and verify who you are talking to before handing out any personal information or money to someone calling or emailing you. They say even if the number appears legitimate on your caller ID, this can be faked.

As a reminder, no government agency or legitimate business will ask for payments through bitcoin, giftcards, or other untraceable payment methods.

If you believe you are a victim of a fraud, please contact your local police service.
