Mizuno stands firm on naloxone kits, for now

Windsor's new police chief is not changing the organization's current stand on naloxone kits, at least for now.

Former chief Al Frederick was very vocal about Windsor police officers not carrying the kits.

"We're going to continue down that path for now. It is a medical crisis, it's a medical response, and it's best served by EMS," said Chief Pam Mizuno. "With EMS we have excellent coverage, an excellent response within our city."

Mizuno said she is always open to reassessing the situation should something change in the city.

"If the landscape changes and the situation in our city changes we are constantly going to reassess and, if need be, we will issue naloxone. But at this point in time with the data that we have, we are going to continue with not issuing those kits at the moment," said Mizuno.

Naloxone is a drug that can temporarily stop the effects of opioid drugs and help restore breathing during an opioid overdose.
