Extreme cold: where to go, what to do

With frigid temperatures in the forecast for Wednesday and overnight into Thursday, the City of Windsor wants to remind the homeless there are places they can go to get out of the cold.

The Downtown Mission is open for single men and women, and families at 875 Ouellette Ave.

Single men can seek shelter at the Salvation Army at 355 Church St.

Single women and families can get out of the cold at the Welcome Centre Shelter for Women at 263 Bridge Ave.

The city also said transportation might be provided for Essex County residents who are eligible for emergency shelter services.

During the day, people can stay at their local community centre or public library.

Extreme cold weather alerts are issued when the temperature falls to -27 C with or without the windchill for one day. Environment Canada does not anticipate it to get that cold overnight, although with a low of -13 C and a windchill of -18 C forecast early Thursday morning, the cold is dangerous for anyone living on the streets.

The Windsor/Essex County Health Unit does consider other weather factors when deciding whether to issue an extreme cold weather alert, such as precipitation and how many days or nights in a row cold temperatures persist.

Those most at risk of cold-related illnesses include the homeless and those who are under-housed, those who work outside, those with a pre-existing heart condition or respiratory illness, the elderly, babies, and young children.

Staying outdoors in extreme cold can lead to frostbite or hypothermia, which is a medical emergency. If you are worried about someone living outside during the cold, call 911 immediately.

The winter months can also be a time of added stress for those who are homeless, living on a low-income, living alone, or living with a profound life change. The 211 helpline can refer people to places to stay warm, community services, and programs.
