Ontario's law-enforcement watchdog agency has cleared Windsor police in an incident earlier this month.
According to a report released Friday afternoon by the Special Investigations Unit, officers arrested a 34-year-old man on outstanding warrants on December 6. The man soon after told police that he felt ill, and he was taken to hospital for assessment.
The man escaped custody at the hospital but was later re-apprehended by a Windsor officer, who returned him to the hospital for treatment of teeth injuries, the report stated.
"Upon investigators speaking with the man and reviewing his medical records, I am satisfied that his injuries, two upper front teeth [that were] broken horizontally at the mid-point, do not constitute a 'serious injury' for purposes of the SIU’s statutory mandate," wrote SIU interim director Joseph Martino. "Accordingly, as it is clear, based on the SIU’s preliminary inquiries that the unit is without jurisdiction to proceed with an investigation, the investigation is hereby discontinued, and the file closed."
The SIU is the oversight agency that investigates reports involving police officers, in which there is a death, serious injury, or complaints about sexual misconduct.
