An attempt to pass a phony driver's licence at a local car dealership has resulted in three arrests.
Investigators from the Windsor police's Financial Crimes Unit received a call on Friday afternoon from a dealership on Tecumseh Road East near Lauzon Road. Officers discovered that a suspect tried to use a fraudulent driver's licence to complete a vehicle lease. The transaction was supposed to be completed later Friday.
The suspect was identified and arrested at the dealership without incident, according to Constable Talya Natyshak. Police then discovered a vehicle sitting nearby with two other occupants. The pair in the vehicle was also arrested.
Mary Maras, 50, of London, is charged with fraud over $5,000, uttering a forged document, possession of identity papers to commit fraud, and personation.
Robyn Malin, 27, and Mark Sierkowski, 39, both from London, are each charged with fraud over $5,000. These charges have not been proven in court.
Windsor police would like to remind businesses to do their due diligence when processing these types of transactions, especially during the holiday season.
"False identification can appear very legitimate on its face," said Natyshak. "Take extra steps if required to confirm a person's identity and information. If something appears suspicious, please do not hesitate to contact police."
The Financial Crimes Unit is still investigating this matter. Anyone with information should call Windsor police at (519) 255-6700 ext 4330. Anonymous tips may also be submitted to Crime Stoppers at 519-258-TIPS (8477).
