A wanted man is in custody thanks to the paws-up work of a Windsor police dog.
Officers with the Windsor police's Problem-Oriented Policing (POP) Unit were patrolling the downtown core Monday afternoon when they spotted a man who was wanted on warrants. The man tried to run from officers when they approached him, according to Sergeant Steve Betteridge. The suspect ran into his home, then took off out the back door.
Betteridge said other officers arrived and helped set up a perimeter, and Police Service Dog (PSD) Coal arrived with his handler. PSD Coal soon picked up the suspect's scent along a fence line on Marentette Avenue near Cataraqui Street, and the man was quickly seen lying on the ground, attempting to hide.
When he saw the K-9 Unit, the man jumped up and started running again, darting between houses. PSD Coal was then deployed and completed the arrest.
The man was treated for non-life threatening injuries at the scene, then again at police headquarters, Betteridge said. The outstanding warrants were for driving-related offences.
