Windsor Assembly Plant to drop third shift on June 29

The end has apparently come for the third shift at the Windsor Assembly Plant.

The plant will end the shift on June 29.

In a video posted on Facebook, which has since been removed, an emotional Dave Cassidy, president of Unifor Local 444, announced the news after leadership was called to a meeting at Chrysler earlier Thursday morning.

"The official sundown of the Dodge Caravan, as most people know, is going to be May 22," said Cassidy. "June 29, we're going to two shifts. From May 22 to June 29, we're going to be maintaining three shifts."

Chrysler Canada spokesperson Lou Ann Gosselin provided confirmation from the company in an email to Blackburn News.

"This decision comes as the company works to align volumes with demand while phasing out production of the Dodge Grand Caravan at the end of May," read the email. "The company will make every effort to place indefinitely laid-off hourly employees in open full-time positions as they become available based on seniority and will offer retirement packages to eligible employees."

The shift had originally been scheduled to end on September 30, 2019, due to falling sales of the Chrysler Pacifica and Grand Caravan minivans. However, the automaker issued several reprieves as the company processed large orders and sales of the Pacifica had rebounded.

The elimination of the shift will affect 1,500 workers.

More details to follow as they become available.
