11 more COVID-19 cases in Windsor-Essex

The Windsor Essex County Health Unit is reporting 11 new cases of COVID-19 and one additional death in the region.

A woman in her 100s passed away due to complications for the virus on Thursday. She was the 58th person in the community to pass away due to COVID-19. That's 8.5 per cent of all the positive cases in the region.

In the last 24 hours, the health unit received over 400 test results, 11 of which were positive. The health unit also conducted another 633 tests and there are now 1,420 tests pending.  In total, 10,012 people have been tested. That represents 2.5 per cent of the Windsor-Essex population.

Windsor-Essex Medical Officer of Health Dr. Wajid Ahmed said despite the delay in data, he is confident the peak has passed.

"Obviously we cannot rely on the last two weeks data for sure just because of those reporting delays reason. But anything that is happening before that two weeks, we can say with confidence that's an accurate picture of what's happening and all the decisions that people are making my impression is they must be looking at that data," said Dr. Ahmed.

Ahmed said data shows that for at least three weeks in April the community had less than 20 cases per day showing we are passed the peak of the pandemic.
