First Nations community given better access to testing

The Windsor Essex County Health Unit is providing testing materials to the Southwest Aboriginal Health Access Centre to help provide testing for the First Nations community in the region.

"During this pandemic, and always, we want to ensure our Indigenous people have options. They need to feel safe and as comfortable as possible to access the services they need. Aboriginal Health Access Centres recognize Indigenous rights to determinations in health and we support COVID-19 screening and testing services as identified and lead by Indigenous communities," said Elayne Isaacs, the integrated care manager with the Health Access Centre.

Screening and testing options are available at their various sites throughout the region. The Southwest Aboriginal Health Access Centre is opening testing beyond its usual clientele to anyone in the First Nations community.

The health unit has confirmed two more residents of long-term care homes in Windsor Essex passed away from COVID-19 on Monday. A woman in her 90s and a woman in her 80s passed away because of the disease. There have been 61 deaths in the community.

There have been 732 confirmed cases of the virus in the region, 287 cases have resolved. The health unit has tested 11,585 people for the virus and is waiting for 1,774 results.
