City staff taking additional measures to encourage safe parks use

City of Windsor parks staff is undertaking a number of measures to ensure people can follow social distancing guidelines while using the city's parks and trails.

City staff said in large part most people are adhering to guidelines and giving others space while out on the trails. Windsor Police Auxiliary and Windsor by-law officers are patrolling parks on foot seven days a week to educate the public when needed. However, the City of Windsor has over 200 parks and 135 km of trails so they are focusing on high traffic areas.

Staff are also taking steps to improve the physical landscape of the parks to encourage distance.

"What we are doing is we are mulching areas that are perhaps low or muddy areas that may discourage people from moving off the trail," said Jan Wilson, director of parks and recreation. "The difficulty is if you do a large area of mulching beside existing trails they are very difficult to maintain can sometimes make it messier and more challenging to use. What we are finding is people are going around people by simply walking on the grass."

Staff are also moving any other obstructions to give people a wider berth on the trail system.

No other measures were adopted during Monday's city council meeting.
