The United Way is distributing almost $1.34-million to support those vulnerable in the pandemic like seniors and low-income families.
Back in May, it asked for applications from charity groups. It got 57. Of those, 35 will share $1,339,890.
Some of the applicants that will get funding include Family Services Windsor-Essex for a COVID-19 counselling support line, Global Resource Centre and Justice for Migrant Workers, and Assisted Living Southwestern Ontario.
Many of the projects are for virtual learning programs and technology, making modifications to housing, to buy personal protective equipment, and to raise awareness during the pandemic.
The money is from the Emergency Community Support Fund, which provides charities and other community organizations to help at-risk populations during the pandemic. The federal government set the fund up, and it is being distributed by the United Way, Community Foundations of Canada, and the Canadian Red Cross.
"The pandemic is having a disproportionate impact on vulnerable people across Canada, including Windsor and Essex County," said United Way/Centraide Windsor-Essex County CEO, Lorraine Goddard. "The fact that United Way received almost three times the number of applications for funding than it can support, demonstrates the impact COVID-19 is having on vulnerable individuals, children, and families."
