The Town of LaSalle is issuing a plea to drivers after receiving numerous complaints from worried pedestrians and cyclists.
The town has three dozen pedestrian crossovers. Often, those are on streets where there is no nearby intersection. They are clearly marked with lines across the road and signs.
It is against the law to drive through them if a pedestrian or cyclist is waiting to cross. However, it would appear a lot of drivers are ignoring them.
"We have received concerns from residents who have had trouble crossing the road at identified pedestrian crossovers," said Peter Marra, the town's director of public works. "Drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists all have a responsibility to know and follow the rules."
Unlike intersections with traffic lights or stop signs where it is safe to proceed once the pedestrian is clear of your vehicle, at pedestrian crossovers, the law stipulates drivers must wait until the person crossing has made it to the other side before proceeding.
There are pedestrian crossovers on Normandy Street at Cenotaph Park, Reaume Road at Malden Road, and Matchette Road at Golfview Drive.
