Transit Windsor to expand service as of September 8

With the kids headed back to school soon, Transit Windsor is expanding its service again.

As of September 8, it will operate on an enhanced Saturday schedule, increase hours of service, and offer extra routes for six secondary schools in the city.

Riders will still have to board at the back of the bus, and until front door boarding resumes, there will be no fare.

The service says it is working with others across Ontario to develop an industry-wide standard to return to front door boarding.

Riders with accessibility needs may continue to use the front doors, but only one wheelchair passenger can occupy the area.

Masks are mandatory on city buses, and once the bus reaches its maximum load, the sign will change to read, "sorry, this bus is full." It will then bypass additional riders, and other buses will be added to that route.

The bus will start running at 5:30 a.m. and continue until 12:30 a.m.

The additional secondary school routes are for W.F. Herman Academy Secondary School, Holy Names Catholic High School, Massey, Riverside, St. Joseph's, and F.J. Brennan.

This month, the province committed more than $6.3 million in phase one funding for Transit Windsor to operate during the pandemic. On Monday, Windsor City Council authorized the administration and Transit Windsor staff to apply for phase two funding. It expects to hear back from the province late this fall or early winter.
