Each November, the Windsor & District Labour Council honours a member of the labour community who has made an outstanding contribution over the past year, but not in 2020.
The council has decided to cancel this year's Charlie E. Brooks Labour Community Service Awards event because of the pandemic.
The council decided a virtual event would not provide the recipient of the award the recognition they deserve.
Usually, the recipient is announced during the Labour Day festivities at the Fogolar Furlan Club, but those celebrations too have been cancelled.
Instead, Labour Day in Windsor will be celebrated online.
The award is named after Charlie Brooks. He was the president of United Auto Workers Local 444 in 1977 when he was murdered at the union's offices by a disgruntled worker at Chrysler Motors.
Last year's recipient was Brian Hogan, the president of the Windsor & District Labour Council, and past president of the Ontario English Catholic Teachers Association's local chapter.
