Health unit provides new tool to assess symptoms

After mixed messages from schools and confusion among parents, the Windsor-Essex County Health Unit has developed a tool to help parents decide when to get their child tested for COVID-19.

According to the health unit, if a child is showing any symptoms of COVID-19, you should consult a doctor for a diagnosis. If an alternative diagnosis cannot be determined, the child should be tested for the virus.

"If you don't want to go and get your child tested, and there is no alternate diagnosis that is provided to you by your health care provider, in this situation, the child and all of the household contacts must self isolate for 14 days," said Medical Officer of Health Dr. Wajid Ahmed.

Dr. Ahmed said the same protocols should be followed for adults going to work.

The health unit reported six new cases of COVID-19 on Wednesday morning. There were four close contacts of a confirmed case and two community-acquired cases among the new cases identified.

There are 56 active cases in the community, and three people getting treatment in the hospital.
