A petition has prompted the University of Windsor to reconsider the name of one of its residences.
An alumnus, Hale Ferrer, launched the petition to rename MacDonald Hall along with third-year student Sophie Morrow on June 12.
Morrow, who is Indigenous, believes the name is inappropriate given the role Canada's first Prime Minister played in the creation of residential schools.
"My grandmother went to residential school as a young child. She was only there a year, but she was abused and it changed her life," Morrow told BlackburnNews.com earlier this year. "My family, we have lost our language."
University President Robert Gordon initiated a committee to review the name representing university stakeholders, the on-campus Aboriginal community, resident services, and the University Student Alliance.
"Like other universities across Canada, we are taking a new look at past naming practices," said Bruce Tucker, a member of the committee. "We are hoping to open the conversation in a way that is constructive and address the concerns of affected members of our campus community, as well as others who wish to voice their opinions and viewpoints."
The university is seeking input from both the campus community and the general public.
