Construction season starting on Huron Church Road

Construction on Huron Church Road, set to begin in early April, marks the beginning of road work season in the City of Windsor.

The $4.9 million reconstruction project will be done on the busy stretch between Tecumseh Road and College Avenue. The project includes concrete, curbs, sidewalks, medians, and street lighting.

"Ten thousand trucks a day, 60,000 cars a day, that's a challenge. Some roads, lesser roads, we might close them or we might eliminate traffic in one direction. But here we have to maintain traffic throughout, pretty much 24/7, 365," said City of Windsor Engineer Mark Winterton.

During Stage 1 of the construction project, the southbound lanes will be completely closed, shifting all traffic to the northbound lanes. Two southbound lanes and one northbound lane of travel will remain throughout the construction project.

The provincial government committed $3 million to the project through the Connecting Links Program and the rest is being funded through the city's capital budget.

"Getting that kind of a boost from senior levels of government really allows to us leverage our dollars and get moving on projects," said Winterton.

Weather permitting, construction is expected to wrap up by September 2021.
