The Town of Essex is asking residents if short-term rental accommodations, like those you might book on Airbnb, should be regulated or licensed.
Right now, the town's zoning bylaw and business licensing framework do not recognize them.
The town has posted a survey on its website so local business owners, residents, and current or prospective short-term rental operators can provide input. It asks respondents to rate their agreement to a list of statements and should not take more than 15 minutes to complete. It is open until June 4.
Local high school students who live in Essex may complete the survey and follow-up questionnaire for one hour of community volunteering toward their graduation requirement.
"From a development standpoint, we recognize that short-term rentals are a complex issue that comes with opportunities and challenges," said Manager of Planning Services, Rita Jabbour. "The feedback provided in the survey will help our team consider the diverse perspective of stakeholders and draft regulations which reflect the concerns of our community."
The town will also host a virtual open house on Monday, June 1, starting at 6 p.m. Participants need to register at essexplanning@essex.ca no later than 24 hours before the open house begins or by calling 519-776-7336 ext. 1128.
A draft of the new regulations will be presented to town council at a special meeting on Monday, June 21.
