Construction on Gordie Howe International Bridge ramping up

People driving by the Gordie Howe International Bridge construction project will start seeing some major progress this summer.

The bridge towers on the Canadian side continue to rise and now sits around 10 storeys high. This work will continue until they reach their final height. The US bridge towers are also under construction and sit at around the same height. The main towers will be about 720 feet high.

Vice President, Corporate Affairs and External Relations Heather Grondin said construction of the bridge deck is not expected to begin until 2023.

The construction of the building that will be at the Canadian Port of Entry is also underway. The foundations are complete and construction will continue throughout the summer months.

The final design of the bridge is expected to be revealed later this summer.

During an update on the project given last week, officials at Bridging North America said they have felt some impacts due to COVID-19.  However, construction is on track. The group still expects the project to be completed by the end of 2024.

The cable-stay bridge will have six lanes of traffic and be about 2.5 kilometres long. It will also include a multi-use path for pedestrians and cyclists which will be toll-free for users.
