Mass vaccination centre at WFCU Centre closes

After five months, the mass vaccination clinic at Windsor's WFCU Centre closes on Saturday.

Since March, Medical Officer of Health Doctor Wajid Ahmed said some 73,000 doses of the vaccine against COVID-19 were administered there.

It's the third mass vaccination site to close in the city. The Windsor Hall clinic in downtown Windsor closed on June 19, and one at the St. Clair College Sportsplex shut down on July 21.

In the future, vaccination efforts in Windsor will focus on the clinic in the former Sears store at Devonshire Mall in Windsor.

Ahmed said the vaccination centre at the WFCU Centre was a significant piece of the region's fight against COVID-19.

"Absolutely critical. That's how I would describe it," he said. "The WFCU site has been our most active and most productive site regarding our vaccine rollout."

The site was staffed by public health nurses, staff from the City of Windsor, and the public.

However, the Windsor-Essex County Health Unit has noted a decline in the number of people getting their first and second doses.

"We recognize that it's a big facility. It does require lots of resources, and it doesn't make any sense when we don't have enough uptake or demand in the community," explained Ahmed.

Two other sites in the county are still operating, at the Libro Centre in Amherstburg and at Leamington's Nature Fresh Farms Recreation Centre.
