Essex County wants federal candidates to know their votes count

Essex County is asking for added commitments to be addressed by local federal government candidates to help the municipalities in moving forward after the next election.

Just over one week into the 2021 federal election campaign, the County of Essex is asking candidates and political parties running in the federal election to address several issues similar to the "Platform 4 Windsor" priorities list put forward by Mayor Drew Dilkens last week.

Warden Gary McNamara said he wants all local candidates canvassing around the region over the next few weeks to know that residents of Essex County matter and that there are a few issues that need to be addressed.

"Municipal tax payers are paying their fair share. Now we need added commitments from the federal government in four key areas to help us move forward," McNamara said.

The priorities include:

• Sustainable and resilient infrastructure. • Strategic business investments. • Universal access to high-speed internet. • Affordable housing.

To address the priorities, the county said it wants a permanent boost in federal funds to help keep up with ongoing repairs and prepare for the effects of climate change. Additionally, Essex County believes the local automotive sectors need strategic investments to assist with building electric vehicles. Other business investments the county wants include the government taking responsibility for the well-being of foreign workers in the agri-food sector.

County officials add it's imperative that rural communities in Essex are not left behind. McNamara said the municipalities all need to have universal access to high-speed internet.

"The pandemic has shown that access to fast and reliable internet is a necessity not a luxury."

Finally the county said the rising cost of home prices and lack of affordable housing is alarming and it needs additional federal support to reduce waiting lists to ensure residents don't find their housing costs outstripping their incomes.

"I encourage Essex County residents to ask your federal candidates in your riding about these issues that are so critical for our future and I urge you all to vote because your ballot really counts," said McNamara.

Election day is on September 20. More information on Essex County's message to federal candidates can be found on it's website.
