Health unit issuing reminders for those eligible to get second dose

There are over 18,000 people in Windsor-Essex County who are eligible for a second dose of a COVID-19 vaccine right now.

The Windsor Essex County Health Unit indicated it will be starting to contact these individuals by phone and email to encourage them to get their second dose. Phone calls will begin Friday evening.

To date, 78.6 per cent of eligible residents aged 12 and older have received a single dose of the vaccine while 71.4 per cent have received both doses.

Medical Officer of Health Dr. Wajid Ahmed said they have seen a slight uptick in people getting their first doses as more vaccination policies are being implemented. About 10-15 per cent of the vaccines administered daily are for first doses. For the last seven days there were under 1,000 doses administered daily.

Vaccines are available for walk-ins or by appointment at the mass vaccination site at Devonshire Mall. To make an appointment go to wevax.ca.

The health unit has also recently partnered with Transit Windsor to bring mobile vaccination clinics into the community.

"We're hoping the bus just makes it easier for us to get out into various communities, move around to where folks are and make it easier for our staff so we can cover more ground," said WECHU CEO Nicole Dupuis.

Dupuis says they are also working on making staff available to set up mobile vaccination sites at large employers throughout the city. Any workplace that is interested should contact the health unit.
