COVID-19 claims the life of woman in her 50s

A woman in her 50s is the latest death in the region because of COVID-19.

The Windsor-Essex County Health Unit reported the woman's death on Tuesday morning. It said she lived in the community.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, Windsor-Essex has lost 454 lives to the virus.

The health unit also reported an increase of 37 cases from Monday. Six of those are still under investigation, but 14 other people caught COVID-19 from close contact with other confirmed cases. Eleven people caught it in the community, five infections can be traced back to outbreaks, and one is travel-related.

The number of active cases has fallen below 300. Public health officials said there are now 288 active infections, 122 of which involve a variant of concern.

The number of people in the hospital with the virus has jumped to 37. There were 29 on Monday.

While on Monday, there were 24 outbreaks in Windsor-Essex, there were 22 on Tuesday, including at five schools.

Ford City Elementary School is the only school with an outbreak that does not involve the Delta variant. The health unit said outbreaks also continue at J.A. William Elementary School, Al-Hijra Academy, St. Anne Catholic High School and St. Joseph's Catholic High School.
