LaSalle man's licence suspended after blowing a warning

LaSalle police say a man has temporarily lost his driver's licence after he was allegedly found driving with a dangerous amount of alcohol in his blood.

At around 1 a.m. Saturday, police say a driver of a GMC pick-up truck was stopped on Normandy Street. The officer that pulled over the vehicle said they could smell alcohol emanating from within the truck upon speaking with the individual.

A breathalyzer test was then administered which determined the driver's blood-alcohol concentration (BAC) exceeded more than 50 milligrams. As a result, the man's driver's licence was taken away and he was suspended from operating a vehicle for three days.

"Anyone issued with this type of suspension must attend Service Ontario, once the suspension is complete, to have their driver’s licence reinstated for a fee of $281.00," read a statement from the LaSalle Police Service.

No additional fines or demerit points were issued.

Under the province's impaired driving act, fully licenced drivers must not exceed a BAC of 80 mg, the Ministry of Transportation states driving with a BAC upwards of 0.08mg is considered a criminal offence. However, driving with a BAC between 0.05 to 0.08 is referred to as the "warn range" which is also punishable and can result in serious penalties.

First-time offences typically result in three-day suspensions, while second and third offences within five years can lead to week and month-long licence suspensions, hefty fines among other consequences.
