The City of Windsor is redesigning the Peace Fountain and it wants to hear from residents.
Every summer since 1978, the Charles Brooks Memorial Peace Fountain is installed in the Detroit River near Coventry Gardens.
After 43 years, the fountain needs to be replaced.
“For more than four decades, the Charles Brooks Memorial Peace Fountain has attracted visitors from near and far, serving as the picturesque backdrop to countless weddings, anniversaries, first dates, graduations and many more special occasions at Coventry Gardens. We now have an opportunity to reimagine this landmark attraction for future generations to enjoy and create new memories. I encourage residents to provide feedback on the design of the proposed new Peace Fountain," said Ward 6 Councillor Jo-Anne Gignac.
City of Windsor planners are asking residents to visit peacefountain.ca to provide their opinion. The website also gives historical information about the fountain and community leader Charles Brooks.
“When it opened in 1978, the Charles Brooks Memorial Peace Fountain was celebrated as a technological marvel and a symbol of peace as the first international floating fountain in the world. Its captivating light and water display has not only served as an inviting gathering place for residents, but has also become a key tourist attraction with positive economic spinoffs. We intend the next generation Peace Fountain to be just as significant for our community,' said Windsor Mayor Drew Dilkens.
The city is also looking to capture photos and memories of the fountain throughout its history. These can also be submitted through the dedicated website.
