Jobless rate tumbles more than a full percentage point in Windsor

Windsor may still have the highest unemployment rate in Canada, but the jobless rate dropped significantly last month.

It fell 1.2 percentage points from 10.4 per cent in September to 9.2 per cent in October.

Statistics Canada's Labour Force Survey showed an increase of 3,400 jobs in the city.

The Labour Participation rate rose 0.4 percentage points to 60.8 per cent.

Across Ontario, employment rose for the fifth consecutive month. Another 37,000 net positions were added to the economy, pushing unemployment down 0.3 percentage points from September to 7 per cent.

Nation-wide, employment remained steady after returning to pre-pandemic levels in September. For the fifth consecutive month, the jobless rate declined. It was down 0.2 percentage points to 6.7 per cent, the lowest level since March 2020.

Gains in retail helped create 31,000 net positions across Canada. Retail added 72,000 jobs, but that was offset by losses in accommodation and food services, while the number of self-employed people fell to its lowest level since March 2007.

The percentage of Canadians working from home didn't change much from the month before. Almost 24 per cent are still working out of the office.

On the whole, Canadians are earning more, about 5.1 per cent more than two years ago. The average hourly wage rose to $29.49 per hour.

They are also not changing jobs at the same rate as their American counterparts. While much has been said about the "Great Resignation" across the border, the percentage of Canadians who changed employers was only 0.7 per cent in October. Before the pandemic, the rate ranged from 0.6 to 0.8 per cent.

During the week of the survey, taken the week of October 10 to October 16, more employers implemented mandatory COVID-19 vaccination policies, and proof of vaccination rules came into effect. Those requirements came were enacted in Ontario on September 22.

The next Labour Force Survey will be taken between November 7 and November 13 and released on December 3.
