Windsor West MP Brian Masse is calling on the federal government to buy vacant waterfront property in Windsor like the former Abars property.
Masse said lands like these need to be protected to prevent shoreline erosion, reduce flooding risk, and protect greenspaces.
"We have to protect this property from being developed and actually keep it green and turn it into an asset for the entire community," said Masse. "We don't want to have a wall of another building, we don't want to have intensification that takes place down here. We already have too much flooding and too many different issues.

The former Abars property at Lauzon Road and Riverside Drive is currently owned by the Detroit International Bridge Corporation. The land was purchased by the company that owns the Ambassador Bridge when there were talks of building a second span.
Masse said there are many ways the federal government could protect the property. He said the Disaster Mitigation and Adaption Fund could be used to purchase and protect the property.
The Abars property is just one waterfront property that Masse is campaigning to protect.
