High winds in the forecast and still-elevated lake levels may cause issues along the Lake Erie shoreline.
The Essex Region Conservation Authority (ERCA) has issued a shoreline conditions statement for the entire Lake Erie shoreline of Windsor-Essex, plus Pelee Island.
The latest outlook from Environment Canada called for sustained southerly winds increasing to 40 kilometres per hour throughout the day Thursday. Wind direction is expected to change to southwesterly and westerly overnight Thursday and remain through Sunday morning.
"The combination of elevated lake levels and predicted wind conditions are below ERCA Flood Watch thresholds," said ERCA Water Resources Engineer Tian Martin. "However, there remains some risk of flooding and accelerated nearshore flooding along the Lake Erie shoreline including Pelee Island as a result of increased wave activity."
ERCA sid any combination of slippery banks, waves, wave overtopping, and fast-moving water could be dangerous, and people along the shoreline should be extra cautious.
The shoreline statement is in effect till 10 a.m. Sunday, but ERCA will continue monitoring conditions.
