An unveiling Friday revealed the fascinating story of Essex Centre.
The Town of Essex showed off its latest heritage plaque outside Essex Town Hall, this one commemorating the history of Essex Centre.
Mayor Larry Snively said the plaque is a reminder that the commercial centre of the town has been at the centre of many historical events and sweeping changes.
"Essex Centre is a tight-knit community rooted in its rich history," said Snively. "The historic Essex Centre plaque is a constant reminder of the early settlers of this land and their significant contributions. We are grateful to live and work on this land."
The town is dotted with historic markers, placed in areas that have significant meaning to the community but are not designated under the Ontario Heritage Act.
"Significant cultural resources, such as buildings, structures and cemeteries, may be identified by the presence of a bronze or aluminum interpretive plaque that has been designed using colours and logos specific to the Town of Essex," according to the town's heritage plaque webpage.
The town's heritage committee is responsible for overseeing the plaque program. Complete information can be found on the Town of Essex's official website.
