Driver arrested in fatal hit and run

The Windsor Police Service has arrested and charged a Windsor man in connection to the fatal hit and run collision last month.

On October 15, an 81-year-old Windsor man was struck by a vehicle at the intersection of Elliott Street and Janette Avenue early in the morning. The driver took off without offering any help to the elderly man, who later passed away from his injuries.

After a three week investigation, police identified a black 2002 Ford Ranger pick-up truck believed to have been involved in the collision.

"We watched hundreds of hours of video in attempts to locate this vehicle. It was tedious, lots of man-hours, lots of different areas of the police service. Everybody pitched in. It was a good team effort," said Staff Sergeant Dave Tennent with the Major Crime Unit.

The pick-up truck was found at an apartment building on Caron Avenue and a suspect was identified. Police say the man was cooperative and was arrested without incident.

On November 5, 57-year old Paul Roenspiess was arrested and charged with failing to remain at the scene of an accident causing death. The charge has not been proven in court.

Tennant said the arrest has given much-needed closure to the family of the victim.

"Our family still cannot accept that we lost a beloved husband, father and grandfather. We are still heartbroken every time when we think about that moment. Thank you to everyone who provided surveillance footage and made phone calls to provide information to help the case. Thanks to the Windsor Police for the tireless and diligent investigation," read a statement from the family.

The victim has not been identified at the request of his family.
