Ontario's law-enforcement oversight agency has exonerated Windsor police in a collision that injured a woman.
The incident took place on September 13, 2021, when a police cruiser rear-ended another vehicle on Huron Church Road. According to the report released Tuesday by the Special Investigations Unit (SIU), the officer was responding to a separate collision that involved injuries and had activated the cruiser's lights and siren.
The driver of the other vehicle had stopped in the passing lane when it was hit by the police cruiser. The passenger, a 43-year-old woman, suffered a broken wrist and nose. The police officer suffered a brain bleed, according to the report.
SIU Director Joseph Martino concluded that the officer did not neglect his duty, even though the officer was driving above the speed limit for a legitimate purpose, and the crash was largely unavoidable.
"In the result, as I am unable to reasonably conclude on the aforementioned record that the [subject officer] transgressed the limits of care prescribed by the criminal law, there are no grounds for proceeding with charges in this case," wrote Martino.
The complete report can be found on the official SIU website.
