Around 300 electric vehicle charging stations will be installed throughout Essex County over the next two years thanks to $2-million of funding from the federal government.
“Communities across Canada are taking these quantum leaps that we’re taking here in Windsor-Essex. The goal is to make sure that you have not just the infrastructure in the communities, but you want to make sure you have infrastructure between communities so that when you are travelling to Toronto to catch that Maple Leafs game, you have a place to power up,” said Windsor-Tecumseh MP Irek Kusmierczyk.
Essex Powerlines is now accepting applications for the Charge Up program. Government funding will support the installation of the charging infrastructure in public places, on-street, workplaces, and multi-unit residential buildings.
“This program is designed to make electric vehicle infrastructure more affordable and readily available,” said Essex Powerlines General Manager Joe Barile. “This $2-million investment allows us to build a sustainable future together.”
The application process was launched in December and Barile indicated there has been a lot of interest in the program. Applications will be accepted until the funding has been utilized. All projects must be completed by September 2023.
Applicants can receive up to $5,000 for a Level 2 charger or 50 per cent of project costs up to $50,000 for a faster charger.
