Health unit urging self-isolating people not to rush out

As many businesses across Ontario reopened Monday for in-person business, Windsor-Essex's acting medical officer of health has said people who were self-isolating need to take care not to rush to the restaurants or bars.

During a media briefing Monday afternoon, Doctor Shanker Nesathurai has reminded people who have completed the five-day isolation requirement after testing positive for COVID-19 that it does not necessarily mean that they are in the clear.

"Even though you're not on self-isolation, you should make sure that you wear a mask, make sure people remain physically distanced from each other, limit the number of contacts, and make good judgements about what activities you want to do in that period of time," said Nesathurai.

While he understands that residents are eager to visit places of business that have reopened, Nesathurai doesn't believe it's a great idea for somebody who had been battling the virus in isolation to rush out.

"I'm particularly concerned about people in day six, day seven, or day eight dining in a restaurant where a mask is not required while eating," said Nesathurai.

As of Monday afternoon, the health unit's official website did not list any active public exposure notices. However, Nesathurai said caution is still suggested for people who have tested positive, and that they should not venture out if they still feel ill or unless they have tested negative and were cleared by a physician.
