A man in his 80s is the latest Windsor-Essex resident to pass away from COVID-19.
The Windsor-Essex County Health Unit confirmed Wednesday afternoon that the man was living in the community, bringing the Windsor-Essex death toll for COVID-19 to 579.
The number of COVID-19 patients in area hospitals has stayed relatively level. As of 3 p.m. Wednesday, there was a total of 41 people in hospital for the virus.
Most of them are at Windsor Regional Hospital, with 32 people admitted. Nineteen of the patients are primarily being treated for COVID-19. Out of the 32 patients, 23 have been fully vaccinated. The hospital also reported six people in intensive care, with three having the virus as the chief complaint. Four of the patients in the ICU are fully vaccinated.
According to the most recent count at Hotel-Dieu Grace Healthcare, six patients were being treated there, four of them fully vaccinated. At Erie Shores Healthcare, there are three people admitted, two of them for COVID-19, and all of them fully vaccinated.
The health unit reported 88 new cases in high-risk settings, though health officials caution that this could be an undercount due to current testing guidelines. The active caseload in Windsor-Essex is up slightly to 277.
A total of 17 outbreaks are being monitored, with seven in LTC facilities, six in the community, and two each in hospitals and workplaces.
