Lakeshore closes park washrooms after vandals strike

Only open since the beginning of May, the Municipality of Lakeshore is closing public washrooms in parks after vandals caused more than $16,000 in damage.

Doors have been broken. Mirrors smashed, toilets and sinks ripped from their anchors. The municipality said vandals spray-painted graffiti on the walls and removed gabage and soap containers.

It will take 150 hours of staff and contractor time to make the necessary repairs.

"This is a frustrating situation, not just for park users who can no longer enjoy the incredible amenities our parks have to offer, but also for Council and our hardworking staff," said Mayor Tom Bain. "We put a lot of pride into creating welcoming public spaces, and, unfortunately, the actions of a few have spoiled it for everyone else."

It's not the first time vandals have caused damage in public washrooms at Lakeshore's parks. Last fall, the Ontario Provincial Police investigated after they targeted nine washrooms.

"We know this is not just a Lakeshore issue," said Bain. "We've heard similar stories from many of our municipal neighbours and regional partners, so we hope someone out there has information that will lead authorities to the perpetrators."

Lakeshore Municipal Council will soon get a report outlining options to increase security and monitoring at outdoor facilities.

In the meantime, anyone with information about the vandalism can call Lakeshore OPP at 519-728-1810 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477. Online tips can be submitted to catchcrooks.ca.

To report an issue related to vandalism or damage to public facilities in Lakeshore, the public can call 519-728-2488 or report it online.
