Quick-thinking owners, wet walls save Lakeshore business

A fire at a popular Lakeshore business could have been much worse if it wasn't for prompt attention.

Lakeshore Fire Department crews were called to On The Beach on Croft Drive at around 6 a.m. Monday, responding to the activation of a fire alarm. When firefighters arrived, flames were seen coming out of one of the walls.

Fire officials say that the business owners were already on the scene trying to contain the flames with fire extinguishers, but firefighters had to cut through the wall to put the flames out. The spread of the flames was minimal due to the owners' efforts to contain the fire, along with material that was wet from heavy rain that fell overnight.

The fire was declared out shortly after 7 a.m. No injuries were reported.

A restoration crew arrived soon after and was able to ready the facility for opening Tuesday as usual.

On the Beach is part of an indoor-outdoor complex on Croft Drive, which offers beach volleyball courts, half-court basketball, ping-pong tables, and horseshoe pits. Other parts of the complex offer indoor golf simulators and miniature golf.

The cause of the fire appears to be electrical. There was no immediate word on a damage estimate.
